Laryngomalacia

Posted by Picasa
Ever since Ty was born he has had a lot of problems breathing. For almost 4 months now we have been going to different doctors trying to figure out what is wrong with him. Well yesterday we went and saw a ENT (ear, nose and throat) specialist and finally got some answers. He put a scope through his nose and down his throat to check it out.
Ty has Laryngomalacia (la-ringo-mal-asia)
Laryngomalacia is the most frequent cause of stridor or noisy breathing in infants. It occurs as a result of a floppy portion of the larynx (voice box) that has not yet developed the strength to provide rigid support of the airway. During inspiration, negative pressure is created through the larynx, which results in a collapse of these structures into the airway and a narrower breathing passage. The partial obstruction is the source of the noise with breathing.
We always would tell the doctors that it sounds like he is breathing through a small straw, and that is pretty much exactly what he is doing. When he breaths his airway collapse in on itself. The doctors assured us that it is something that corrects by itself by the time he is 1 years old. He also said it is not painful for him, so that's a relief. It is just really hard to listen to him because it sounds so bad. There is one treatment where they go in and laser it away. but the doctor said he would only do that if it got worse. It is such a relief to finally know what is wrong with him. Now that we know what it is we can help him better. It is worse when he is lying down or crying, so we try not to let him cry if we can help it, we angled his bed at about a 30 degree angle, and he sleeps on his side instead of his back. All of these things so far seem to be helping him more. I just hope it gets better as soon as possible.

Ty,Ty... He looks a lot like Dahl in that picture. It's going to be fun to see if they look alike when Ty's older. We're glad Ty's O.K., at least you know what the sound is now, and it sounds like the sound isn't anything to worry about so that's good. Luv you guy's.

Poor little guy. We all hope his breathing gets easier every day. You asked on the blog about MJ and Brian. They both are interviewing for graduate school, it is tricky because they both have to match the best schools, best place in the SAME area. It will be interesting to see where you are going for dental school. GOOD LUCK.

Aww, poor Ty. I'm glad you finally have a diagnosis so you know what's going on...I just hope it gets better soon. Nate's baby actually had something similar to this but I think it was in his trachea...it was so hard to watch him breathe when he was little, but now that he's a year old he breathes totally fine! Ty, will ougrow it soon enough!

You guys, that was a FABULOUS explanation of Laryngomalasia. Did you write it all by yourselves? What a relief to now know more about Ty's condition and that he will soon grow out of it. Good to see you guys last night! Let's hang out some more!
