Home Bound

Well after a long six days in NICU Ty is finally home with his family. As you can tell by the pictures he got the classic NICU hair cut. He looks so funny now, but as for mohawks go it is pretty stylish. When it grows out a bit we will shave his whole head so he doesn't look so silly. Now that I am home and not running back and forth from the hospital I can now update you all about Ty. Ty Aaron Salmon was born at 12:34 pm on June 9th. He weighed 9 pounds 9 ounces and was 21 1/4 inches long. When he was born he was having some difficulty breathing so he was sent to the NICU to be put on 100% oxygen. The doctors were not sure exactly what was wrong but told us it could be a couple of different things. They thought it could be an infection, Hyline Membrane Disease (not producing any Surfactant to lubricate his lungs) or a cyst in his lungs (which they saw on his first chest x-ray.) Because of one or all of these problems the doctors said he was experiencing Pulmonary Hypertension which means he was having trouble exchanging oxygen in his lungs. So they started him on antibiotics for the possible infection, put a chest tube into his lungs and gave him Surfactant to lubricate his lungs. Although they thought he had a cyst they decided to deal with the other problems first. During this difficult time lots of fasting and praying was going on by lots of members of the family which we appreciate greatly. When they did the second chest x-ray the cyst was gone. They sucked a lot of blood from his lungs, and kept him on oxygen for a couple of days. He also stayed on his antibiotics for 5 days even though they ruled out an infection. Because his hands were so swollen from all the IVs they had to shave both sides of his head to put an IV in his head. In the end we never got a complete diagnosis, we don't know exaclty what made him sick but he is doing great now and is hopefully home for good. It was a miracle and we really love and appreciate all of you.
